BIOGRAPHY

The young Austrian mezzo-soprano Anja Mittermüller received her first musical training from Thomas Künne and completed her bachelor's degree with Marek Rzepka at the Hanover University of Music, Drama and Media. From autumn 2026, she will be studying at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna under Claudia Visca and Florian Boesch.

Her artistic development has been shaped by masterclasses with distinguished musicians including Claudia Visca, Robert Holl, Brigitte Fassbaender, Sir András Schiff, and Franz Welser-Möst. Together with her duo partner, pianist Richard Fu, she won First Prize at the 2024 Wigmore Hall/Bollinger International Song Competition, becoming the youngest winner in the competition's history. From autumn 2026, she will join Wigmore Hall as an Associate Artist.

In January 2026, she won the prestigious Emmerich Smola Advancement Prize at the SWR Competition for Young Opera Stars, receiving both the Orchestra Prize and the Audience Prize. Shortly thereafter, she was honoured with the ICMA Young Artist Award 2026. She has also been selected by BBC Radio 3 for the next edition of its New Generation Artists scheme and, from January 2027, will be a member of Bayer Kultur's stARTacademy, a programme dedicated to supporting outstanding young talents across music, dance, theatre, film, and the visual arts.

Anja Mittermüller made her debut at the Vienna Konzerthaus in October 2021 with a recital in the Musica Juventutis series. Following her success, she has since been invited back regularly. From the 2026-27 season, she will be featured as a Vienna Konzerthaus "Great Talent" with four projects spanning a wide range of repertoire and formats: performing Schubert with Musicbanda Franui, giving a recital with Richard Fu in the Schubert Hall, presenting an aria programme with the Vienna Chamber Orchestra, and appearing alongside Julian Prégardien in the series “Schubert für Alle”.

Recent highlights include Mozart's Requiem with the Tonkünstler Orchestra of Lower Austria under Andreas Ottensamer and her debut at the Vienna Musikverein as the soloist in Schumann's Der Rose Pilgerfahrt with the Vienna Singverein under Johannes Prinz. In August 2025, she made her operatic debut at the Bregenz Festival as Tisbe in Rossini's La Cenerentola.

Among the highlights of the 2025-26 season were a Christmas programme at the Salzkammergut Festival in Bad Ischl, Bach's Magnificat with the Tonkünstler Orchestra under Stefan Gottfried, Bruckner's Te Deum conducted by Yutaka Sado, Haydn's Missa in tempore belli with the Vienna Chamber Orchestra under Jan Willem de Vriend at the Vienna Konzerthaus, and Beethoven's Ninth Symphony with the Orchestra Sinfonica e Coro Sinfonico di Milano under Emmanuel Tjeknavorian in Milan.

An active recital artist, she has appeared at the Schubertiade festivals in Dürnstein and Atzenbrugg, the Serenade Concerts of Lower Austria, KlassikKlang Berndorf, Heidelberger Frühling, Eppan Song Summer, the Schwarzenberg Festival, and London's Wigmore Hall. Further highlights include Schubertiade performances with Sir András Schiff and Julian Prégardien at the Vienna Konzerthaus and the Kronberg Academy. During the 2026-27 season, she and Richard Fu will give recitals at Wigmore Hall, Eppan Song Summer, Madrid's Teatro de la Zarzuela, and in Barcelona.

In summer 2026, she makes her Salzburg Festival debut as part of the Young Singers Project, appearing as Dryade in a new production of Richard Strauss' Ariadne auf Naxos conducted by Manfred Honeck.

From the 2026–2027 season onwards, Anja Mittermüller will be a member of the Vienna State Opera’s Opera Studio, where she will appear, amongst other roles, as a Dryade in a new production of Strauss’ Ariadne auf Naxos conducted by Franz Welser-Möst. Another highlight of the coming season is Bach’s St Matthew Passion with the Concentus Musicus, conducted by Stefan Gottfried, at the Vienna Musikverein and the Brucknerhaus in Linz.
